Thank you to Amanda Dean who prepared this version. The attachments provide an alternative version of the activity, designed for use with middle school and upper elementary students. This activity can be used as a culminating activity after you have introduced classical genetics, and it can serve as formative assessment to identify any areas of confusion that require additional clarification.ĭownload Student Handout: PDF format or Word formatĭownload Teacher Preparation Notes: PDF format or Word format I hope that helps. In the simulation activity, Dragon Genetics – Understanding Inheritance, students mimic the processes of meiosis and fertilization to investigate the inheritance of multiple genes and then use their understanding of concepts such as dominant/recessive alleles, incomplete dominance, sex-linked inheritance, and epistasis to interpret the results of the simulation. We also covered dragon poetry, an interview with Cressida Cowell and looked at a legend about a dragon. It did have images on and throughout but I was worried about copyright issues so deleted. If there is a page reference on the question slides, this means the questions are only based on these page numbers rather than the whole chapter.įor the chapters that don’t have any questions for, we often completed summarise activities based on what we have read so far, or sometimes, the children would think of their own questions! I have added questions for MOST chapters based on the questioning of VIPERS (vocab, inference, prediction, explain, retrieval, summarise/sequence). At the bottom of the vocab page are the page numbers for each chapter. This was my whole class reading for 5 weeks.įor every chapter, I have added a vocabulary page to define any words I thought children might question.
